Tree won't save on character or external export?

Hi all,

Basically I'm trying to save/export a behavior tree and use it in another scene on different opsive ai characters. I can export the behavior tree (seemingly without issue) but when I load another scene, have a new character (or even the same prefab i initially created the tree on) and add the previously saved external behavior in the behavior tree component, nothing actually shows up in the behavior tree editor - it's just blank.

I've read through the documentation and some forum posts but I can't really see where I'm going wrong. I've also tried simply using the Behavior Tree Reference task in the new character's empty behavior tree (referencing the 'saved' external behavior) and it just disappears when i run the scene. Any help or direction on where I'm going wrong would be much appreciated!
