Same Behavior tree on different objects with different variable values

Is there a way to have multiple different objects use the same set up tree just with just with different value so that if I have to edit the tree it affects all of them? Exporting and using as external doesn't work since as i click off the object the variable values get changed back
 
When you export to an external tree you can add the same variables to your local tree. These variables will override the external tree variable values.
