Since you are using our character controller there is a good integration between the two assets and you can get pretty far with it. If you haven't seen it take a look at this page for an overview of the behavior tree that is included with the integration:

With that said, adding functionality beyond the built in tasks/integrations is usually done with scripting a new task or using the Playmaker/Bolt integration. We have had a lot of artists create complex behavior trees with the Playmaker integration especially. In that case they don't need to write any new code at all.
