My character falls through the terrain - but the capsule doesn't

I wanted to attach images but the forums say even 1mb is too large so you can see some images of the result and the object hierarchy:

When I hit play, the character falls through the ground until only the head remains in the capsule (which does collide with the terrain) and so always moves around just underneath the terrain

Did you replace the animations? That looks like the pose the character makes when the Animator can't play an animation.
