Equip Item without pickup or grab

In my game the player has a limited number of weapons, like Fallout VR or such. You do not get to pick up a new weapon in the level. The player enters a level with a certain loadout, cannot grab or drop any. How can I do this in VR like I do with the standard FPS controller? I've been messing with item set manager, adding equip/unequip etc.

By adding the Hold (Slot) ability shows the item however it's not really being held. it just appears as if equipped.

I would approach this by calling ItemPickup similar to how the item pickup component does when you physically pick up a weapon. The VR character does not need to use the Item Set Manager.
