A problem with door interaction

I am having a struggle with openable doors and the VR add on. I've tried a few different ways to work a hinged door but when I grab the handle I move myself instead of the door and when I release my grip it throws me away from the door with some force.

I may be missing something simple so any help would be greatly appreciated.

The VR add-on doesn't allow for physical interactions so for this it'll take a new ability. In this case though I suspect hat the problem is that the door collider is intersecting your player collider so that is throwing you into motion.
