Damage from explosion with melee weapon?

I setup a bunch of exploding crates, when shooting them they explode and the character takes damage & ragdolls as expected when too close. With a melee weapon equipped, the character hits them and they explode. I get visual indicators regarding the damage, but the character takes none. I was able to duplicate this in the demo scene with Nolan. Any ideas on what am I missing to have the character take damage from explosion while using a melee weapon?
 
Good catch - the fix required a few code changes and will be in the next version.
